9th December 2024: The Uttar Pradesh government has invited Odisha’s Chief Minister, Mohan Chran Majhi, to participate in the upcoming Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. The state government has also extended invitations to the Deputy Chief Minister and other cabinet members. The Kumbh Mela will begin on January 13, with expectations of over 430 million attendees, including pilgrims, saints, and tourists. The Uttar Pradesh government has made extensive plans for the event, including the development of large-scale digital infrastructure to enhance the experience.

To ensure a smooth pilgrimage, the administration has organized 44 ghats (steps to the river) for devotees to bathe in the holy waters. Additionally, as part of the ceremonial rituals, flower petals will be showered from the sky as pilgrims and saints perform their religious activities. The government has also arranged comprehensive healthcare services for the participants. In an effort to improve the local environment, the government plans to plant 10 lakh trees in the area during the Mela. Distinguished international guests have also been invited to join the occasion.

What is the Kumbh Mela and Why is it Celebrated?

The Kumbh Mela is a major Hindu festival and religious gathering held every 12 years at four locations across India: Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. Known as one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, millions of devotees attend to take a ritual bath in the sacred rivers, which is believed to purify them of sins and grant spiritual liberation.

The Kumbh Mela’s origins lie in the ancient Hindu myth of the “churning of the ocean,” in which gods and demons fought for the nectar of immortality. During the battle, some of the nectar is said to have fallen at the four locations where the Mela is observed. Devotees believe that bathing in these holy waters during the Mela brings divine blessings and spiritual merit. The event, while primarily a religious occasion, also serves as a celebration of Indian culture and unity.
