Borigumma,Feb, 4: The traditional Magha Mandei Yatra was observed on the last Wednesday of the month of Magha at the temple of Maa Shankulai located in Bisinghpur village under Borigumma Block.
Two days later, after the ceremonial arrival of the sacred staffs (lathi), the region’s renowned annual Magha Mandei Yatra of Lord Bhairav was held on Friday at the Bhairav Temple in Borigumma. The temple was beautifully decorated for the occasion, with attractive lighting arrangements.
Ritual worship of Bhairav and other village deities was performed as per tradition. Hundreds of ceremonial staffs and palanquins from nearby villages gathered at the old Borigumma Bali Ghara. After the arrival of Bhairav’s sacred garland of command (Agyanmala), rituals were performed for all village deities, following which the procession of staffs and palanquins proceeded towards the Bhairav Temple.
During the grand procession, the area reverberated with fireworks and traditional musical instruments. The chief priest and others conducted the rituals according to tribal customs. Local belief holds that worshipping and appeasing the village deities protects the region from diseases and epidemics, ensures a good harvest, promotes the welfare of the village, and keeps livestock healthy.
Devotees fulfilling vows were seen offering goats, chickens, and rams as sacrifices. More than 10,000 devotees reportedly gathered for the Bhairav Yatra. Police forces were deployed to maintain law and order and manage traffic during the festival.
