Busan, South Korea, May 30, 2025: Indian athletes delivered a stunning performance at the 27th Asian Athletics Championships, clinching three unexpected gold medals, marking a major milestone in the nation’s sporting history.
Ending a 36-year wait, Avinash Sable claimed gold in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, overtaking Japan’s Yutaro Ninaa with a dramatic final-lap surge. His victory was not only thrilling but also a symbolic breakthrough for Indian distance running.
India’s women’s 4x400m relay team, featuring Jisna Mathew, Rupal Chaudhary, Rajitha Kunj, and Subha Venkatesan, struck gold with the season’s best timing of 3:34.18 minutes. This win marked India’s first gold in the event after 12 years, ahead of Vietnam and Sri Lanka.
Star sprinter Jyothi Yarraji added to the gold tally, defending her title in the 100m hurdles with a timing of 12.96 seconds. The Odisha-based athlete continues to impress, having also won the event at the 2023 Bangkok edition.
India also secured silver in the men’s 4x400m relay and medals in the women’s long jump through Ancy Sojan (silver) and Shaili Singh (bronze). After Day 3, India stands second in the medal tally with 5 golds, 6 silvers, and 3 bronzes, while China leads with 12 gold medals.
With several finals still to come, India’s athletics contingent has already made a powerful mark in Busan.
