Miserable State of Local Vegetable Market Prompts Vendor Association to Seek Action

Malkangiri, Nov 29:  Around 22 years ago, several stalls were built in the Malkangiri Municipality area for daily vegetable vendors. Today, these stalls are found in a deplorable and unsafe condition.

Some vendors are sitting on broken and damaged platforms, while in some stalls, rainwater leaks through the roof. At times, water from drainage channels overflows, creating an unhygienic environment. In certain stalls, pieces of roof cement are falling off, raising fears among vendors about the possibility of accidents.

Customers are also seen exercising caution while buying vegetables due to the unsafe and unhygienic surroundings.

Although the matter has been reported several times to the Municipality, no steps have yet been taken. Despite repeatedly informing authorities, no action has been initiated so far. Vendors remain concerned about how they can conduct business safely and how buyers can purchase good-quality vegetables under such conditions.

Today, the Daily Vegetable Vendors, Senior Citizens’ Association, and the Malkangiri Chamber of Commerce submitted a memorandum to the District Collector, requesting immediate intervention for repairs and improvements.

It remains to be seen how quickly the administration responds to this pressing issue.
