Bhubaneswar, October 13, 2025 — In a major stride toward revolutionizing India’s agricultural landscape, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today launched two pivotal schemes — the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana and the Pulses Aatmanirbharta Mission — at a national-level event held at Pusa, New Delhi.

In alignment with this launch, a state-level programme was conducted in Bhubaneswar, led by Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Mohan Charan Majhi. The programme marked Odisha’s commitment to supporting the national vision of increasing agricultural productivity, diversifying crops, and making Indian agriculture more self-reliant and sustainable.

New Schemes to Boost Agricultural Growth

The schemes introduced focus on two major areas critical to India’s food security and rural development:

  1. Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana: Aims to enhance crop productivity, encourage modern and sustainable farming techniques, and ensure optimal use of agricultural resources.

  2. Pulses Aatmanirbharta Mission: Focuses on increasing domestic pulses production, providing support through high-quality seeds, improved farming methods, and better market access to reduce dependency on imports.

In Odisha, the schemes will be rolled out initially in four key districts — Kandhamal, Malkangiri, Sundargarh, and Nuapada — where agricultural transformation can bring wide-ranging economic and social benefits.

Odisha’s Role in the National Agricultural Mission

The state government is taking a comprehensive approach to implementing these schemes, with a strong emphasis on crop diversification, income enhancement, and climate-resilient agriculture. Farmers in the state, particularly in tribal and rain-fed areas, will be encouraged to shift from paddy monoculture to a more diverse crop portfolio including pulses, oilseeds, and other high-value crops.

This strategy is aimed at ensuring better returns for farmers, improving soil health, and making farming practices more sustainable in the long run.

Strengthening the Fisheries Sector

In addition to crop-focused interventions, the Odisha government is also prioritizing growth in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. Two new projects were highlighted during the Bhubaneswar event:

  • Integrated Aqua Park

  • Wholesale Fish Marketing Centre

These initiatives aim to establish a complete value chain — from production to processing to market access — in the fisheries sector. This approach will help create new employment opportunities, increase exports, and support the overall rural economy.

Expected Impact

The implementation of these schemes is expected to:

  • Increase food grain and pulses production in backward and tribal regions

  • Diversify rural incomes through cultivation of high-value crops

  • Strengthen self-reliance in agriculture and reduce import dependency

  • Promote sustainable, climate-smart agricultural practices

  • Boost employment and entrepreneurship in agriculture and allied sectors

By integrating modern practices with local knowledge, Odisha aims to empower farmers and build a resilient agricultural economy.

Odisha’s Vision for a Self-Reliant Future

The state-level programme reflects Odisha’s proactive alignment with the central government’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India). Through the implementation of these schemes, Odisha seeks to become a model for sustainable agriculture, economic empowerment of farmers, and rural development.

With coordinated efforts from all levels of government, these initiatives are expected to bring long-term benefits to the farming community and contribute significantly to India’s goal of achieving agricultural self-sufficiency and inclusive growth.
