Umerkote Residents Face Terror from Straying Chhattisgarhi Elephants

Umerkote, 11th Sept 2025: In the Umerkote block of Nabarangpur district, wild elephants from Chhattisgarh are spreading fear. Two elephants are reported to have strayed from the Sitanadi Sanctuary in Chhattisgarh and entered various parts of Tohra Panchayat. They were seen damaging maize crops in the fields and consuming the produce.

Upon hearing about the destruction of their maize crops, some residents of Mahulpada village went to the maize fields near Khudingimala and Dangariguda to drive away the elephants. During this attempt, a minor named Tepasing Majhi was attacked by one of the elephants. Champa Majhi, who was nearby, bravely intervened and rescued Tepasing from the elephant’s grip.

Tepasing was immediately taken to the Raighar medical center for first aid, but as his condition worsened, he was referred to the Umerkote Sub-Divisional Hospital. Reports say the elephant had stepped on his chest and leg, causing serious injuries. This incident has triggered panic across the region.

Despite the danger, the forest department has yet to take any concrete action to drive the elephants away or spread awareness among the locals, according to residents.

Public Repair of Bargarh Road Connecting to District Hospital

Bargarh: The road under the overbridge near Ranapratap School in Bhatli, which connects directly to the district headquarters hospital, had been in a pathetic condition for a long time. During the rainy season, water up to two to three feet would accumulate, making the road impassable. For over two months, efforts were made to draw the attention of the district administration, but no action was taken.

Due to frequent accidents, local organizations like the Joint Farmers Association, Sankalp Parivar, and Koshal Sena, along with local residents, collected small donations of ₹50–₹100 from each household and carried out the road repair work themselves.

During the repair, over a hundred people voluntarily participated. Even journalists who had come to cover the event joined in the labor. With just two hours of effort, the repair work was completed. This act of community service received much appreciation and praise from the public.
