Puri, May 31: In a major relief to devotees attending the upcoming Rath Yatra, the Puri district administration has announced that 100 auto-rickshaws will run free of cost between Talabania and the District High School during the festival. This initiative aims to ease congestion and ensure safe, affordable travel for pilgrims.
The decision was finalised during a high-level coordination meeting held at the Transport Commissioner’s office in Cuttack, which brought together officials from the transport, police, NHAI, and representatives from bus operators’ associations.
Authorities have also issued strict warnings against overcharging by bus and auto operators. Transport officials will keep a close watch, and any complaints of inflated fares will result in immediate action.
To support the large influx of visitors, the administration is deploying ambulances, cranes, and vehicle mechanics at key locations. A 24-hour control room will be set up by the RTO in Puri to address emergency needs and monitor traffic flow.
In a move to enhance safety and transparency, CCTV cameras will be installed in Talabania, and all public transport vehicles will be required to display clear fare charts. Temporary rest shelters with drinking water and sanitation facilities will be arranged at major bus stops.
Additionally, interested bus operators will be granted special permits to run services to Puri on alternative routes. Guidelines for permit applications and approvals have already been discussed.
Officials also confirmed that extra teams will be stationed at bus terminals in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri to assist with crowd management and passenger support.
This year’s transport plan reflects the administration’s strong focus on providing a safe, efficient, and comfortable experience for all pilgrims during the sacred Rath Yatra celebrations.
