25th March 2025: Rourkela Airport is set for significant improvements as a team of six experts from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) visited the airport on Tuesday to assess its current infrastructure and potential for expansion. The team includes specialists in Civil, CNS (Communication, Navigation, Surveillance), and ATM-FPD (Air Traffic Management – Flight Procedure Design).
This visit comes after the Odisha state government urged AAI to develop a master plan for the airport’s growth. On February 15, the government sent a letter to AAI Chairman Mr. Bipin Kumar, committing to cover the costs associated with the survey and planning process. In response, the government deposited ₹40.52 lakh on March 6 to fund the necessary assessments.
The proposed upgrades include extending the runway, installing advanced systems like Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), and adding night landing capabilities. Plans also include expanding the terminal, building new facilities like cafeterias and lounges, and improving overall amenities. With the combined effort of the state government and AAI, Rourkela Airport is set to become a more efficient and modern air travel hub.
