Odisha Marks World Indigenous Day with Tribal Art, Dance, and Dialogue

Jeypore, 11th Aug 2025: The Department of Anthropology at Vikram Deb University, Jeypore, Koraput district, celebrated World Indigenous Day. The Director of COATS, Koraput, Dr. Prafulla Chandra Mahapatra, and tribal researcher Prof. Maguni Charan Behera attended as chief speakers. They spoke about the definition of “indigenous,” its evolution, and the relevance of artificial intelligence for tribal communities.

Among other guests, the university’s Registrar, Mr. Mahesh Chandra Nayak, shared his views on the rights of indigenous people and the preservation of their mother tongues. The program coordinator, Mr. Durga Prasad Panda, delivered his speech in a tribal language, while the university’s NCC Officer, Dr. Laxman Patra, also addressed the gathering.

The meeting was conducted by Anthropology Department lecturer Ms. Pinky Hira, and a vote of thanks was given by lecturer Mr. Jayadev Senapati. Faculty members from various departments of the university, along with a large number of students, participated in the event.

On this occasion, students of the Anthropology Department organized a traditional tribal food fair, showcasing over 50 varieties of indigenous dishes. Cultural programs highlighting tribal heritage were also held.
