A trip to Daringbadi had long been on our travel list. So when our friends suggested a road trip to this picturesque hill station, we jumped at the chance. Nestled amidst pine forests, coffee plantations, and rolling valleys, Daringbadi rises to an altitude of about 3,000 feet in Odisha’s Kandhamal district, offering a refreshing escape from the state’s tropical plains.
Interestingly, the town derives its name from a British officer, Daring, and the local word “badi”, meaning village. Over time, it has earned the affectionate title of “Kashmir of Odisha”, thanks to its cool climate, verdant hills, scenic plateaus, and rare snowfall—a feature that sets it apart in the region.
The Journey to Daringbadi
Driving to Daringbadi itself is a visual treat. The roads wind through lush landscapes dotted with pepper, coffee, and turmeric plantations, offering glimpses of local life in Odisha’s hill country. The journey is filled with moments that make you pause, breathe, and simply take in the serenity of the surroundings.

Our adventure began with a visit to the Midubanda Waterfall, located just a short drive from the main town. To reach the base, visitors descend 181 steps, each step revealing a more immersive view of the gushing cascade and surrounding greenery. The waterfall is a perfect picnic spot, and the sound of the water provides a meditative background to the natural beauty around.
On the way, we explored the pine forests, where the tall trees create a quiet canopy and a cool refuge from the sun. Wandering among these trees, one truly feels the magic of Daringbadi’s natural charm.
