Nandankanan, Mar, 24: Nandankanan is fully prepared to tackle the upcoming severe heatwave.
Intense summer conditions are expected in the coming days.
Unbearable heat has already been felt since February.
Therefore, the authorities of Nandankanan Zoological Park have taken special measures to ensure the safety and comfort of animals and birds.
Extensive arrangements have been made for the animals housed in the zoo.
Preparations have begun to keep 328 enclosures cool.
These enclosures house 4,150 animals belonging to 178 species.
Bamboo mats and thatched coverings have been installed over each enclosure to reduce heat.
If temperatures rise further, ice blocks will be placed inside the enclosures.
Most herbivorous animals will be provided with cucumbers, watermelons, and cool drinks.
Carnivorous animals like tigers and lions will be given meat chilled with ice.
Water ponds will also be covered to keep the water cool.
Separate water arrangements have been made in the elephant enclosure.
