Jeypore,April 10:: All students of Class 5 and Class 8 have passed the examinations. Only 11 students failed, and they were those who did not appear for the exams—5 from Class 5 and 6 from Class 8.
After many years, the pass-fail system was reintroduced from the last academic session. For this, question papers were provided by the Education Department. However, answer sheets were evaluated by teachers within their own schools, which reportedly led to the 100percent pass result.
Earlier, all students were promoted regardless of whether they appeared for exams or not. This approach was taken lightly by teachers, students, and parents, and many students lacked basic knowledge appropriate to their class, making it difficult for them to cope in higher classes.
To improve learning outcomes, the pass-fail system was reintroduced in Classes 5 and 8. Educationists had welcomed this move, expecting better results in board exams like matriculation. They had suggested that answer sheets should be evaluated by teachers from other schools to ensure fairness.
However, in reality, teachers evaluated answer sheets within their own schools. According to some teachers (who wished to remain anonymous), only those who did not appear for exams were failed, while all others were passed—even if many had not written correct answers and were still given good marks.
They said that if evaluation had been done by teachers from other schools, the results might have been different. Teachers are generally reluctant to fail students from their own schools, as it could harm the school’s reputation and invite criticism from parents.
When contacted, Block Education Officer Chandan Kumar Nayak stated that students who did not appear for the exams have failed and will be given another chance to take the test. Notices have been issued to their parents, and special preparation will be arranged before the re-examination.
In the Jeypore block and urban area, 2,728 students in Class 5 and 3,015 students in Class 8 appeared and passed the examinations.
