Bhawanipatna, May 12 (BNP): In a landmark infrastructure decision aimed at accelerating the growth of western Odisha, the Odisha Government has approved the long-awaited expansion of the Bhawanipatna–Khariar road into a modern four-lane highway. The ambitious project is being hailed as a transformative step for regional connectivity, trade, transportation, and economic development.
Announcing the project, Odisha Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Prithviraj Harichandan described the initiative as a major milestone for the people of the region. “We have listened to the aspirations of Bhawanipatna residents. This four-lane corridor will not only ease daily commuting but also emerge as a strong driver of economic growth for farmers, traders, businesses, and the people of western Odisha,” the Minister stated.
The existing 70-kilometre two-lane road connecting Bhawanipatna and Khariar will be widened into a four-lane highway under a project estimated at approximately ₹640 crore. In addition, five major bridges and 15 minor bridges will be newly constructed to strengthen the corridor’s infrastructure. The aging bridge over the Tel River, considered a crucial connectivity link, will also be renovated and reinforced under the project.
The upgraded highway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Bhawanipatna and Khariar, ensuring smoother movement of passenger and commercial vehicles while reducing fuel consumption and transportation delays. Farmers from Kalahandi and Nuapada districts are likely to benefit immensely, as the improved road network will help them transport agricultural produce, vegetables, and forest products to markets more quickly and efficiently.
Officials believe the project will also enhance road safety, reduce accident risks, and improve access to schools, colleges, hospitals, and government offices for thousands of residents. Emergency services, including ambulances and disaster response teams, are expected to benefit from faster connectivity during floods, cyclones, and other natural calamities.
The four-lane corridor is also anticipated to attract new investments and commercial activities along the route. Petrol pumps, hotels, warehouses, shops, transport hubs, and small-scale industries are expected to develop alongside the highway, generating both direct and indirect employment opportunities for local youth.
The initiative is being viewed as a game-changing development project that will strengthen connectivity between Kalahandi and Nuapada districts while opening new doors for tourism, commerce, and industrial growth in western Odisha.
With the foundation stone likely to be laid in the near future, residents across the region have welcomed the announcement with optimism and hope, seeing it as the fulfilment of a long-pending demand and a major step toward faster development and improved quality of life.
