Nabarangpur, May 19: A meeting of the District-Level Natural Disaster Management (Flood) Committee was held today under the chairmanship of Dr. Maheshwar Swain in Nabarangpur.
Gouri Shankar Majhi, MLA of Nabarangpur and Chairman of the District Planning Board, attended the meeting as the chief advisor. Senior district officials, including the Additional District Magistrate, Sub-Collector, municipal authorities, departmental officers, BDOs, Tahsildars, and officials from various departments, also participated in the meeting.
The discussion mainly focused on preparedness and effective management of possible floods during the upcoming rainy season. The Collector directed concerned officials to immediately identify and repair weak river embankments across the district. Instructions were also given to ensure adequate stock of rice, kerosene, flattened rice, jaggery, cattle feed, medicines, safe drinking water, and sanitation facilities in flood-prone areas.
Health department officials were advised to remain prepared to prevent any outbreak of epidemics in affected regions and to maintain sufficient stocks of essential medicines, snakebite injections, halogen tablets, ORS packets, and bleaching powder.
The MLA emphasized the need for advance preparedness in vulnerable areas and instructed officials to ensure timely supply of food, shelter, drinking water, and medicines to affected people during disasters. Special attention was given to the safe evacuation of women, children, elderly persons, and differently-abled individuals to designated shelter centres.
Officials were also directed to complete desilting and repair of drains in urban areas, ensure purified drinking water supply, identify shelter centres, stock emergency supplies in remote regions, and clear road blockages during emergencies. Post-disaster restoration work, including road clearance, repair of damaged electric poles, restoration of electricity, drinking water, and communication services, was instructed to be carried out on a war footing.
The Collector further directed officials to monitor the registration validity of country boats used for passenger transport and to prohibit their operation during evening hours for safety reasons. Special instructions were issued for advance storage of food materials in inaccessible areas of Tentulikhunti block during the monsoon season.
On this occasion, the District Natural Disaster Management Draft Handbook 2025–26 was officially unveiled. The meeting proceedings were coordinated by project officials of the district emergency department, while the vote of thanks was delivered by District Emergency Officer Shraddhanjali Sahu.
