GI Recognition for Tripura Tribal Musical Instrument Marks Cultural Milestone

Agartala, June 16: The recognition of a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for a traditional tribal musical instrument from Tripura marks a significant milestone in the preservation and promotion of the state’s indigenous cultural heritage.

The GI tag is expected to provide legal protection to the traditional art form, ensuring authenticity while safeguarding it from imitation. It also aims to enhance the visibility of Tripura’s rich tribal traditions at both national and international platforms.

Officials stated that the recognition will help promote local artisans, musicians, and cultural practitioners by opening up new opportunities for livelihood generation and cultural tourism. It is also expected to encourage younger generations to take pride in and actively participate in preserving their traditional musical heritage.

The instrument, deeply rooted in the cultural practices of Tripura’s tribal communities, plays an important role in rituals, festivals, and social gatherings, reflecting the region’s rich oral and artistic traditions.

Cultural experts noted that the GI tag will not only strengthen cultural identity but also contribute to safeguarding intangible heritage in a rapidly modernising world.

The development is being seen as a positive step towards recognising and preserving India’s diverse indigenous art forms while supporting community-based cultural economies.
