Bhubaneswar, June 23 {UDN}: The southwest monsoon is gradually advancing across Odisha. While the monsoon entered the state through Baripada and Paradip, it has now become active in Koraput and Phulbani as well. However, rainfall remains inadequate, leaving most parts of the state relatively dry.
Despite the arrival of the monsoon, heatwave conditions continued in western Odisha, particularly in Jharsuguda and Sambalpur districts. Temperatures crossed 40°C in seven cities. Boudh recorded the highest temperature in the state at 42.6°C, followed by Hirakud (42.0°C), Sonepur (41.8°C), Sambalpur (41.2°C), Jharsuguda (40.8°C), and Balangir (40.3°C). Intense heat and humid conditions have been making life uncomfortable across these regions.
Meanwhile, even as the monsoon reaches coastal Odisha, residents continue to experience oppressive heat and high humidity.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, heatwave conditions are likely to persist in Jharsuguda and Sambalpur on Wednesday. In addition, hot and humid weather is expected in the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagarh. A Yellow Warning has been issued for these districts.
The weather office has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and rainfall in several parts of the state during the afternoon hours. Hot and humid conditions are expected to continue across Odisha until June 20, even as monsoon activity gradually strengthens.
The Meteorological Department has advised people to remain cautious, stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours, and follow weather advisories issued by local authorities.
