Unusual Monsoon Dry Spell Leaves Odisha’s Major Rivers Nearly Waterless During Ashadha, Exposing Vast Riverbeds and Alarming Residents

Bhubaneswar:July 2 {UDN}:  In an unusual and worrying situation during the holy month of Ashadha, almost all the major rivers across Odisha have dried up significantly due to an acute shortage of rainfall. Rivers that are normally expected to flow with abundant water during the monsoon season are instead presenting a bleak and lifeless picture. The prolonged dry spell and weak monsoon activity have caused water levels to fall drastically, leaving vast stretches of riverbeds exposed.

The sight is both surprising and alarming. Wherever one looks, the rivers appear almost barren, with endless expanses of sand replacing what should have been flowing water. Instead of the powerful currents typically associated with the rainy season, only scattered pools of stagnant water and large sandbanks can be seen. This unusual condition has raised serious concerns among farmers, environmentalists, and local communities who depend on these rivers for irrigation, drinking water, fisheries, and other daily needs.

The drying up of rivers during the peak monsoon period is being viewed as a warning sign of changing weather patterns and insufficient rainfall. If substantial rains do not arrive soon, the situation could adversely affect agriculture, groundwater recharge, and the overall water security of the state. The vast stretches of exposed sand across Odisha’s rivers serve as a stark reminder of the growing impact of an erratic monsoon and the urgent need for sustained rainfall.
