Angul, July 3 (UDN): Heavy rainfall on Thursday night led to a breach in an ash pond operated by NTPC Limited at Derang in Kaniha block of Angul district, resulting in ash slurry flowing into nearby areas.
The incident occurred after sustained rainfall in the region, which is believed to have increased pressure on the ash containment structure. Following the breach, ash-laden water reportedly moved into surrounding low-lying stretches, including nearby habitations and farmland.
Local administration teams, along with company officials, have initiated immediate containment and assessment measures. Preliminary response efforts are focused on stopping further spread of the slurry and evaluating environmental and infrastructural impact in the affected areas.
Officials are currently inspecting the site to determine the extent of damage and to identify the exact cause of the breach. Restoration and cleanup operations are expected to begin once containment is stabilized.
