Machkund Dam Discharges Water After Heavy Rains Trigger Rise in Water Level, Prompting Opening of One Gate as Precautionary Measure

Machkund, July 10 [UDN}:  Due to incessant rainfall, one gate of the Machkund Dam has been opened. Continuous heavy rains have caused the D-Dam of the Machkund Hydroelectric Project in Lamtaput Block to reach the danger level, prompting authorities to open one of its gates.
Water is currently being released through Gate No. 7 at a rate of 1,000 cusecs per second. While the reservoir’s full capacity is 2,590 feet, the water level rose to 2,587 feet, after which the gate was opened as a precautionary measure.
Koraput district has been experiencing continuous rainfall for the last three days, with Lamtaput Block recording the highest rainfall during this period.
Project officials have informed that if the rainfall intensity increases further and the water level continues to rise, additional gates of the dam may also be opened in the coming days.
The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged people living in downstream areas to remain alert and follow official advisories.
