SCB Medical Public School Introduces Standard and Advanced Mathematics and Science Streams Under the New CBSE Education System

Cuttack, July 14 [UDN}: From the current academic session (2026–27), the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 will be implemented in all educational institutions affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Initially, the policy is being introduced in Classes VI and IX this year, and it will gradually be extended to higher classes in the coming academic years.

Dr. Niranjan Swain, Principal of DAV School, Cuttack, stated that under the earlier system, students in Class IX studied two languages. However, as per NEP 2020, a Three-Language System (R-1, R-2, and R-3) has been introduced from this academic year.

Under this system, a Class IX student will study either two foreign languages along with one regional language or two regional languages along with one foreign language. The third language (R-3) will be assessed internally by the school. In the final examination, marks obtained in only two languages will be considered, and the total marks will remain unchanged at 500.

Previously, students had the option of Basic and Standard Mathematics in Class IX. Under NEP 2020, however, Standard Mathematics and Standard Science have become compulsory for all students. In addition, two optional subjects—Advanced Mathematics and Advanced Science—have been introduced for meritorious students who wish to gain deeper knowledge beyond the regular curriculum.

A student will appear for a three-hour examination carrying 80 marks in Standard Mathematics and a separate one-hour examination carrying 25 marks in Advanced Mathematics. Students opting for both Standard and Advanced Mathematics will take the Advanced examination immediately after completing the Standard examination, making the total duration four hours.

The marks obtained in Advanced Mathematics will be mentioned in the final marksheet only if the student secures at least 50 percent marks (12.5 out of 25 or above). If the student scores below 50 percent, the marks will not be reflected in the marksheet. However, marks obtained in Advanced subjects will not be added to the overall total marks of the student. These subjects are intended solely for knowledge enhancement and advanced learning.

A similar examination and evaluation pattern will be followed for Advanced Science as well.

Students of Class IX opting for Advanced Mathematics and Advanced Science will get an opportunity to study portions of Class XI and XII syllabi in advance. For these advanced subjects, students will be required to attend additional classes for one hour and twenty minutes every day after regular school hours, Dr. Swain informed.
