Red Alert for Puri Ahead of Rath Yatra as IMD Predicts Intense Rainfall

July 15 (UDN): Puri is likely to witness intense rainfall on the day of the world-famous Rath Yatra, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a Red Warning for July 16 under the influence of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.

According to the IMD, Puri and Jagatsinghpur are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with the possibility of extremely heavy showers at isolated places. The forecast has prompted authorities to step up preparedness as lakhs of devotees are expected to gather in the holy city for the annual chariot festival.

Apart from the Red Warning, the IMD has issued an Orange Warning for several districts, including Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Boudh, Kandhamal, Khurda, Nayagarh, and Ganjam, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely.

A Yellow Warning has also been issued for Balasore, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sonepur, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Rayagada, and Gajapati, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall.

The active monsoon conditions are expected to persist over the next few days. On July 17, heavy to very heavy rain is forecast in parts of western and northern Odisha, while several coastal districts, including Puri, are likely to continue receiving heavy showers. The intensity of rainfall is expected to gradually decrease from July 19, although isolated heavy rain may continue in a few districts.

The IMD has advised pilgrims, residents, fishermen, and people living in low-lying areas to remain vigilant and strictly follow weather advisories issued by the authorities. Devotees travelling to Puri for Rath Yatra have also been urged to monitor official weather updates, avoid waterlogged areas, and cooperate with the administration for a safe and smooth festival experience.

Despite the forecast of heavy rain, preparations for the grand Rath Yatra are continuing, with authorities making extensive arrangements to ensure the safety and convenience of devotees during one of Odisha’s largest religious gatherings.
