Sambalpur, July 31 (UDN): The Hirakud Dam has opened 14 gates to release excess water following increased inflows into the reservoir due to heavy monsoon rainfall, leading to a rise in water levels in several rivers across Odisha.
The controlled release from the dam is part of water management measures to maintain the reservoir’s safety and regulate excess inflow. Authorities are closely monitoring river conditions, particularly in downstream areas, as increased discharge may affect water levels in connected river systems.
Continuous rainfall in various parts of Odisha has resulted in swelling rivers, with several low-lying areas facing increased flood risks. District administrations have been placed on alert and are keeping a close watch on vulnerable locations.
Residents living near riverbanks and flood-prone areas have been advised to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
Officials are monitoring rainfall trends, reservoir inflows, and river levels to take timely action and minimise the impact of rising waters during the ongoing monsoon season.
