Bhubaneswar, Aug 24: Authorities at Hirakud Dam opened three additional sluice gates on Monday as the reservoir level continued to rise following heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha.
With the latest openings, a total of eight gates are now open at the dam , five on the left side and three on the right.
The reservoir level was recorded at 623.02 feet and was continuing to rise. Inflow into the reservoir was around 1.53 lakh cusecs, while the outflow had increased to about 1.63 lakh cusecs.
Most of the released water was being discharged through the spillway, with additional water flowing through the power channel and canals for different uses.
Water levels and flows at several downstream locations were also being closely monitored as authorities assessed the impact of the increased discharge.
The decision to open more gates comes amid continuing rainfall across Odisha and rising inflows into the reservoir. Dam authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation and regulating the discharge according to the reservoir conditions.
People living in areas downstream of the dam have been advised to remain alert and follow official safety instructions, particularly as water discharge increases.
Authorities are continuing to monitor rainfall, inflow and downstream water levels to ensure that the reservoir is managed safely during the ongoing monsoon.
