Puri, Sept. 4 (UDN): Janmashtami celebrations in Odisha received an artistic touch on Friday as Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik and acclaimed sand animation artist Manas Sahoo paid tribute to Lord Krishna through striking sand creations that captivated devotees and art lovers alike.
At Puri Beach, Pattnaik unveiled an elaborate sculpture of Bal Krishna, depicting the playful deity relishing butter and surrounded by 101 Makhan Handis. The installation also featured Krishna’s iconic flute, a cow and earthen pots filled with butter and curd, recreating the imagery closely associated with his childhood.
Sharing photographs of the artwork on social media platform X, Pattnaik extended Janmashtami greetings and expressed his wish that the festival bring peace, happiness and prosperity to everyone.
While Pattnaik’s sculpture celebrated Krishna’s traditional childhood charm, Manas Sahoo presented a different artistic interpretation through an innovative sand animation. His creation used shifting sand imagery to narrate scenes from the life of young Krishna, blending storytelling with the dynamic art form.
The animation, also shared on social media, highlighted Krishna’s playful and divine persona through a sequence of evolving visuals rather than a static sculpture.
Janmashtami, which commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna, was celebrated across Odisha and the country with temple rituals, devotional singing, fasting and cultural programmes.
The works of Pattnaik and Sahoo added a unique creative dimension to the festivities, demonstrating how Odisha’s celebrated sand artists continue to merge spiritual themes with contemporary artistic expression.
