Bhubaneswar, Sept. 7 (UDN): The Odisha government has given district collectors one week to ensure that old English spellings of place names are removed from government signboards and replaced with the officially revised versions.

The Revenue and Disaster Management Department has directed collectors across the State to identify government offices, institutions and other official establishments where outdated spellings are still displayed and ensure their immediate replacement.
Additional Chief Secretary of the department Dr Aravind Padhee issued the directive after it came to notice that some government establishments were continuing to use old spellings despite an earlier deadline for making the changes.
The department had previously allowed one month for government offices and institutions to update their signboards with the revised English spellings. Private and non-government establishments were given six months to make the necessary changes.
With some government offices yet to comply, the latest directive places responsibility on district collectors to oversee the implementation at the grassroots level.
Collectors have been asked to complete the exercise within seven days and submit compliance reports to the department. They have also been instructed to take immediate action wherever outdated spellings are found on government signboards.
The move is aimed at ensuring uniform use of the officially approved English spellings of places across government establishments throughout Odisha.
