Kotpad, Oct 13 [UDN}:* The distribution of flood relief assistance to families and farmers affected by the recent floods in Kotpad block of Koraput district has begun, with the administration launching the process from Bikrampur village.
According to preliminary assessments, approximately 1,500 houses have been damaged, while crops spread across nearly 8,500 acres of agricultural land have been destroyed. Paddy, sugarcane and maize are among the major crops affected by the floods, leaving farmers worried about their livelihoods and the losses suffered during the agricultural season.
Tehsildar Trinkil Sethi and Agriculture Officer Soumendra Biswas informed that the Revenue Department and Agriculture Department are jointly assessing the damage. A joint survey report will be submitted to determine the extent of losses and identify eligible beneficiaries for relief assistance.
Under the flood relief norms announced by the state government, financial assistance has been prescribed for families whose houses have been damaged. The provisions include assistance of up to ₹1.20 lakh for a completely damaged pucca house and ₹1.30 lakh for a completely damaged kutcha house. For partially damaged houses, assistance of ₹6,500 has been prescribed for pucca houses and ₹4,000 for kutcha houses. Families whose huts have been completely destroyed are eligible for assistance of ₹8,000.
The government has also announced compensation for eligible small and marginal farmers who have suffered crop losses. The prescribed assistance is ₹8,500 per hectare for crops grown on unirrigated land, ₹17,000 per hectare for irrigated land and ₹22,500 per hectare for long-duration crops.
The final number of beneficiaries and the total amount of financial assistance will be determined after the damage assessment is completed and the final survey report is submitted. The administration is continuing the assessment process to establish the extent of damage to houses and agricultural land.
Farmers across the flood-affected areas are facing considerable distress, as reports indicate that paddy crops in several affected fields have been completely destroyed. The loss of standing crops has raised concerns about agricultural income and the financial security of farming families.
The commencement of relief distribution from Bikrampur village marks the beginning of assistance for affected households and farmers in Kotpad block. The final relief amount for each eligible beneficiary will depend on the verified extent and category of damage under the applicable government norms.
