Balangir, Oct 15 (UDN): Rajendra University in Odisha’s Balangir district has cancelled its proposed students’ union elections, citing concerns over campus violence and the prevailing law and order situation.
The decision was announced through an official notification issued with the approval of the competent authority following an emergency meeting held at the Vice-Chancellor’s office.
The university stated that the decision was taken in view of the prevailing law and order situation, reports in the media and inputs received from the district administration. Consequently, the students’ union elections will not be conducted as previously scheduled.
The move comes amid tensions on the university campus since Tuesday, when two groups of students reportedly clashed over allegations of violations of election guidelines. The confrontation raised concerns about maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of students and staff during the election process.
In response to the situation, a large police contingent was deployed on the campus to prevent further escalation and maintain law and order.
The cancellation comes at a time when students’ union elections are scheduled to take place in colleges and universities across Odisha on Thursday. The developments at Rajendra University have disrupted the planned electoral process at the institution.
The university’s decision underscores the administration’s concerns over conducting the elections amid tensions on campus. No fresh date for the students’ union polls was announced in the notification.
Further developments are awaited as the university administration and district authorities assess the situation.
