9th June 2025: In the lush green hills of Koraput district in Odisha, a quiet revolution is brewing—coffee cultivation. Spearheaded by the Odisha Government’s consistent efforts, this initiative has brought new hope and prosperity to the region, especially among its tribal communities.

Koraput, with its cool climate, high altitude, and fertile soil, offers perfect conditions for growing high-quality Arabica coffee. What makes this effort truly remarkable is the leadership of tribal women, who are actively involved in every stage of coffee production—from planting and harvesting to processing and packaging.
These women, many of whom had limited economic opportunities in the past, are now becoming entrepreneurs and skilled cultivators. Their involvement in coffee farming has not only increased their household incomes but has also elevated their social status within the community.
Recognizing the impact of this initiative, NITI Aayog, India’s premier policy think tank, has lauded the project as a model for inclusive development and women’s empowerment. By promoting coffee as a viable cash crop, the government has successfully turned a remote tribal region into a symbol of sustainable agricultural innovation.
The success of Koraput Coffee is now reaching beyond state borders. With growing demand in national and even international markets, the brand is slowly establishing itself as a symbol of quality, resilience, and grassroots empowerment.
