14th February 2025: In a move to strengthen healthcare in Odisha, the state government is fast-tracking the opening of two new medical colleges: Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College in Talcher, Angul, and the Government Medical College in Phulbani, Kandhamal. These institutions are expected to improve both medical education and healthcare services in the region.
A virtual meeting led by Health Commissioner Aswathy S on February 13 reviewed the progress of the projects, focusing on finalizing infrastructure and addressing any operational hurdles. The main objective is to secure approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to begin admitting 100 MBBS students by the academic year 2025-26.
To ensure timely progress, local officials have been instructed to hold weekly meetings to resolve delays and meet all necessary requirements. This initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to improve healthcare access in rural areas and provide more opportunities for aspiring medical professionals. Once operational, these colleges will play a key role in transforming the local healthcare landscape.
