Balimela Square Gets First Traffic Signal in Malkangiri Town

Malkangiri,7th Aug 2025: A new traffic control signal was inaugurated today at Balimela Square in Malkangiri town by District Collector Somesh Kumar Upadhyay.

Given Malkangiri’s strategic location bordering Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, and being connected by National Highway 326, the area witnesses heavy vehicular movement throughout the day. This often leads to traffic congestion and frequent road accidents.

Responding to repeated demands from citizens and stakeholders, the Malkangiri Municipality allocated ₹7.5 lakh for the installation of the traffic light system. The contract was awarded to GM Tender, and this is the second such initiative after the earlier installation at DNK Square.

The municipality also plans to install similar traffic signals at Canal Square (en route to Chhattisgarh) and the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) Square in the near future.

Inauguration ceremony was attended by:

  • Naresh Chandra Sabar, Chief Development Officer, Zilla Parishad
  • Manoj Kumar Barik, Chairperson, Malkangiri Municipality
  • Kavita Mahant, Vice Chairperson
  • Rajiv Lochan Nayak, Executive Officer, Municipality
  • All ward members and other officials.

This initiative is aimed at improving road safety, streamlining traffic flow, and reducing accidents in the growing urban center.
