Indian Railways to Install CCTV in 74,000 Coaches and 15,000 Engines for Enhanced Safety

14th July 2025, New Delhi: In a major step to improve passenger security, Indian Railways has decided to install CCTV cameras in all its coaches and engines. After successful preliminary trials, the railways will equip 74,000 coaches and 15,000 engines with CCTV surveillance systems.

Each coach will be fitted with four cameras, while six cameras will be installed in each engine. The cameras are designed to capture high-quality footage even when trains run at speeds of 100 km/h and under low-light conditions, ensuring round-the-clock monitoring.

To protect passengers’ privacy, the CCTV cameras will be discreetly installed in common areas such as near the doors. Cameras will be positioned on the front and rear sides of the coaches, as well as on both sides of the engines. The system will utilize both dome cameras and fixed deck cameras for comprehensive coverage.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with Minister of State for Railways, Raabneet Singh, has reviewed the progress of the CCTV installation project. They have emphasized the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimize the monitoring process, enabling faster detection and response to any untoward incidents.

With the deployment of these cameras, Indian Railways aims to closely monitor and curb the activities of antisocial elements and gangs that have been troubling passengers. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce such incidents in the near future, ensuring safer and more secure journeys for millions of travelers across the country.

This move highlights Indian Railways’ commitment to adopting advanced technology for passenger safety and maintaining law and order on trains.
