Innovation on Wheels: Young Scrap Collector Powers Bicycle with Solar Panel

Gunupur Mar, 20:A poor scrap-collecting youth has drawn attention by generating electricity on his bicycle using a discarded solar panel. The young man, who earns his livelihood by collecting plastic bottles and scrap materials, has innovatively attached a thrown-away solar panel to his bicycle to produce electricity.
He has mounted a solar panel board and a small battery on the bicycle. Through this setup, he is able to light a dynamo lamp and has also installed a small speaker to listen to music. Additionally, he can charge his mobile phone using this arrangement.
The youth’s name is Gamela Basna. He is a resident of Marjiramanipeta village in the Palakonda area of Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh. For the past few months, he has been staying in Gunupur and collecting plastic bottles and scrap from roadsides to sustain himself.
At night, he takes shelter either near temple premises or in roadside rest sheds. Earlier, he had purchased a speaker, but he had to depend on others to charge it. After his speaker and chip were stolen once, he decided not to rely on anyone and instead thought of generating electricity on his own using solar power.
Despite being poor and helpless, Gamela Basna has come into the limelight for producing electricity in this innovative way through his intelligence and determination.
