Kotpad Block Office Hosts ‘Our Dress, Our Identity’ Programme Highlighting Importance of Traditional Clothing

Kotpad, April 8: On the occasion of “Odia Pakhya–2026,” being celebrated across the state as per the direction of the Culture Department of the Odisha Government, the program titled “Our Dress, Our Identity” was organized today at the Kotpad Block office.
It was highlighted that the traditional attire of tribal communities in Kotpad Block of Koraput district is gradually disappearing. The younger generation is showing less interest in wearing their traditional dress, leading to the risk of its extinction.
The Kotpad Mirgan handloom textiles, which represent the unique identity of the local tribal community, have earned fame across Odisha and India. With the aim of promoting local art, culture, and especially traditional attire, this special program was organized by the block administration.
The handwoven Kotpad Mirgan garments, symbolizing tribal heritage, are gaining recognition as a major attraction in Odisha and beyond.
The program was held under the leadership of Kotpad Block Development Officer Sandhyarani Samartha, who attended as the chief guest. Local participants showcased their identity by wearing traditional Kotpad Mirgan attire.
Speakers at the event emphasized how modernization is causing the gradual loss of traditional identity and attire, and stressed the urgent need for preservation. It was stated that “our dress is not just clothing, but a symbol of our ancestors’ identity and pride.”
Senior block officials, local representatives, and staff attended the event and appreciated the initiative. It is hoped that such programs will inspire the younger generation to reconnect with their cultural roots.
Among those present were Block Chairperson Kamala Bhatra, Vice-Chairperson Tapan Panigrahi, A-BDO Manoj Nayak, WEO Satya Narayan Sethi, along with all sarpanches, committee members, GPOs, and staff of the Kotpad Block office, who contributed to making the event a success.
