News in Santali to be Broadcast on Doordarshan Soon

7th December 2024: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently announced that news will soon be available in the Santali language on Doordarshan, India’s national television channel. The new service is expected to begin within the next 6 to 7 days. This initiative comes after the President of India expressed a strong interest in making news accessible in Santali, highlighting the importance of reaching out to tribal communities in their native languages.

The Santali people are one of the largest indigenous groups in India, mainly residing in states like Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh. Their language, Santali, belongs to the Austroasiatic family and is an integral part of their identity. With their rich cultural heritage, including unique music, dance, and traditions, the Santali community has made significant contributions to India’s diversity. Broadcasting news in Santali will not only help preserve their language and culture but also ensure they stay informed with important updates in a language they understand.
