8th July 2025: In a major push towards strengthening the rural economy, the Government of Odisha has taken significant steps to expand and modernize the fisheries and horticulture sectors. These two sectors play a vital role in generating employment, improving nutrition, and increasing farmers’ income, especially in the state’s coastal and tribal regions.
To support this growth, the state government has approved the restructuring of the Fisheries and Horticulture Services Cadres. As a result, the number of personnel in the Fisheries Service Cadre has been increased to 835, ensuring better reach and efficiency in delivering technical and extension services to fish farmers across the state.
This cadre expansion is expected to enhance field-level support, improve access to government schemes, and accelerate development in aquaculture infrastructure and training. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to transform fisheries into a high-growth sector.
The government has also set a target of producing 33 lakh metric tonnes of fish annually, with a focus on both inland and marine aquaculture. Achieving this target will contribute to Odisha’s food security, boost exports, and create more livelihood opportunities.
Simultaneously, horticulture is being developed with equal emphasis. Initiatives include promoting high-yield crops, improving irrigation systems, and building cold storage and market linkages to reduce post-harvest losses.
These proactive measures highlight the government’s commitment to a resilient, diversified agricultural economy that benefits both producers and consumers. By investing in skilled manpower and setting clear production goals, Odisha is laying a strong foundation for sustainable and inclusive agricultural development.
