Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has sought a financial assistance of Rs 12,56,148 crore from the 16th Finance Commission for the period 2026-31. The demand was presented during a meeting with the commission, where Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi highlighted the state’s fiscal requirements and development priorities.
The requested amount has been categorized as follows:
- Compensation for revenue loss before devolution: Rs 9,88,422 crore
- Funds for state-specific needs: Rs 1,10,434 crore
- Grants for rural and urban local bodies: Rs 1,00,036 crore
- State disaster management funding: Rs 31,004 crore
- Disaster mitigation grants: Rs 29,252 crore
During the meeting, CM Majhi emphasized the need for an increase in the states’ share in central taxes from 41% to 50%, arguing that enhanced devolution would help states manage their development plans more effectively. He also proposed an increase in Odisha’s share from 4.528% to 4.964%.
The Odisha government has asserted that these financial requirements align with the state’s development goals and growing infrastructure needs. The Chief Minister expressed optimism that the Finance Commission would consider the state’s proposals favorably to support its long-term growth and stability.
