Odisha Sets INR 47,000 Crore Revenue Target from Mining Sector

2nd June 2025: The Odisha government has projected a revenue target of over ₹47,467 crore from mining activities for the current financial year. The mineral and metal industries continue to be a major contributor to the state’s economy, particularly in terms of tax collection. A significant portion of this revenue is expected to come from the extraction of key minerals such as iron ore, coal, and bauxite, which alone are estimated to contribute around ₹46,567 crore. Additionally, revenue from minor minerals has been projected at ₹900 crore.

In recent years, Odisha has witnessed a steady rise in mining-related revenue. Back in 2014–15, the total collection stood at just over ₹5,335 crore. By 2018–19, this figure had nearly doubled, and in 2021–22, the state recorded its highest-ever mining revenue of approximately ₹49,859 crore. Although the following year saw a drop to ₹38,075 crore, revenue rebounded to ₹46,396 crore in 2023–24, demonstrating the sector’s resilience and continued importance.

Alongside mining, the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has also placed strong emphasis on enhancing collections from other sources of taxation. Commercial taxes are expected to generate over ₹44,394 crore this year. This includes collections from GST, VAT, and sales tax. Further contributions are anticipated from sectors such as transportation, electricity, industrial water usage, irrigation, land registration, and excise duties. The government is aiming to maximize internal revenue generation by tapping into multiple sectors to strengthen the state’s financial position.

This approach reflects Odisha’s broader strategy of leveraging its natural resources while also diversifying its revenue streams for sustainable economic development.
