26th November 2024: At the 4th National Conference on Climate Change in Bhubaneswar, Odisha’s Forest Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia proudly shared that the state has planted 52 million trees under the “Ek Ped, Maa ke Naam” campaign, making Odisha a leader in tree planting efforts across India.

The conference, organized by the Odisha State Pollution Control Board and the Indian Chamber of Commerce, focused on tackling environmental pollution through increased forest cover. Minister Khuntia acknowledged the state’s ongoing challenges with urbanization and industrial expansion but stressed that fighting land degradation and improving waste management would require a joint effort across multiple sectors.

Khuntia also highlighted the growing concerns of climate change, such as rising temperatures and unpredictable rainfall. He called for more effective use of the unused 18,000 crore DMF (District Mineral Foundation) funds to fund grassroots initiatives that can make a real difference. Deputy Director-General of the Ministry of Forest, Environment, and Climate Change, AT Mishra, added that lifestyle changes and returning to sustainable practices are crucial in preserving the environment for future generations.
