Reservoirs Swelling Amid Continuous Showers; Gates Stay Shut

Jeypore, 29th Aug 2025: Due to continuous rainfall triggered by a low-pressure system, water levels have risen in the reservoirs of four major hydroelectric projects in undivided Koraput district. Compared to last year, the Indravati and Machhkund reservoirs are holding more water, while the Upper Kolab and Balimela reservoirs have slightly lower levels than the previous year.

Since none of the reservoirs have reached the danger mark, no gates have been opened.

At Balimela, despite the heavy rainfall, the water level is 18.50 feet lower than last year. Its maximum storage capacity is 1516 feet.

At the Indravati hydro project in Nabarangpur district, today’s water level stood at 635.43 meters, compared to 634.18 meters on the same day last year – an increase of 1.25 meters. The reservoir’s maximum capacity is 642 meters.

At Upper Kolab, this year’s water level is 1.33 meters lower than last year. The reservoir’s maximum storage capacity is 858 meters. Last year, excess water had forced the opening of gates to release water.

At the Machhkund project’s Jalaput reservoir, the level is 2746.80 feet today, compared to 2742.65 feet last year, meaning an increase of 4.25 feet due to the rains. Its maximum storage capacity is higher still.

Overall, the reservoirs have swelled from the monsoon rains, but water remains within safe limits.
