Nabarangpur Jan, 16: A meeting of the District Road Safety Committee was held at the Ashok Mehta Conference Hall in the Collector’s Office, under the chairmanship of District Collector Dr. Maheshwar Swain, in connection with the observance of National Road Safety Month.
Regional Transport Officer Jitendra Bhoi welcomed all the participants and briefed them about the various programs to be conducted during the month as per the agenda.
Officials from the CDMO, SDR & DSP, DIPRO, Sub-Collector’s Office, Deputy Collector, Executive Engineer (NH), R&D Division, Assistant Manager of OSRTC, DPEO, DPM, AHM, TM, Executive Engineer (Municipality), representatives of private bus owners’ association and truck owners’ association, committee members, and journalists including Bank Bihari Bisoyi and Prabhati Bisoyi were present.
During the meeting, special emphasis was laid on creating road safety awareness through LED displays, banners, posters, leaflets, special enforcement drives, competitions in schools and colleges, eye check-ups for drivers, walkathons, Rakshak training camps, joint checking by police and transport departments, and the installation of warning signboards.
Strict action will be taken against violations such as overspeeding, not wearing helmets and seat belts, drunken driving, overloading, carrying passengers in goods vehicles, and using mobile phones while driving. Measures include imposition of fines, seizure of vehicles, and cancellation of driving licences.
It was also stressed that there is a need for wide publicity of the government compensation scheme under which Rs2 lakh is provided to the family of a person killed in a hit-and-run accident by an unknown vehicle, and ₹50,000 to a seriously injured person.
Additionally, a Good Samaritan—a kind-hearted person who helps accident victims within the golden hour—will be rewarded with ₹2,000 as an incentive.
