Bhubaneswar, 11th Aug 2025: Over the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the state, particularly cases of atrocities against girl students and women, the Biju Janata Dal has been staging protests. The Biju Chhatra Janata Dal and Biju Yuva Janata Dal have announced that the second phase of their agitation will begin on August 1.
At a press conference held at Shankha Bhavan on Tuesday, party MLAs Byomkesh Ray and Devi Ranjan Tripathy criticized the state government.
Mr. Ray said that in the past 13 months under BJP rule, law and order in the state has collapsed, and incidents of crimes against women have increased. Girl students are not safe anywhere — from beaches to schools and colleges. The Gopalpur gang rape, the self-immolation of a college student, and the burning of a minor girl in Balanga have all become major talking points.
From August 1 to 7, state-wide protests will be organized by students. They will meet their local police stations and SPs to demand improved law and order and better protection for girls and women. They will also submit memorandums addressed to the DGP.
From August 8 to 14, students across the state will send lakhs of open letters to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Mr. Ray stated.
Mr. Tripathy added that recent incidents have brought shame and condemnation to Odisha at both the national and international levels. The office of the US President has even issued a travel advisory urging people not to visit Odisha along with five other Indian states. He said that until women and girls are safe in the state, the Biju Janata Dal will continue its agitation.
