Why We Celebrate “Chadhakhai” in Odisha

In Odisha, the day after Kartika Purnima is celebrated as “Chadhakhai.” This day marks the conclusion of the Kartika fast, a month-long ritual where devotees refrain from consuming certain foods, cut their hair, and offer prayers and worship to Lord Damodar, Lakshmi Narayan, and Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The day of Chadhakhai signifies a kind of relaxation or indulgence after a period of spiritual austerity.

The term “Chadhakhai” literally means “breaking the fast” and is a day when individuals who have been fasting throughout Kartika month are allowed to eat special foods, which are prepared in a simple and sattvic manner, devoid of spices and heavy ingredients. The practice promotes good digestion and helps in detoxifying the body after a month-long period of abstinence. It is a day to celebrate with a clean and balanced meal, which is believed to rejuvenate both the body and mind.

In the traditional sense, the month of Kartika involves various practices like avoiding meat (especially fish, which is avoided on Chadhakhai), and a special focus on consuming healthy and pure foods. The reason for celebrating Chadhakhai is to mark the end of austerities and bring a sense of renewal and purity, where devotees can enjoy a meal in moderation, and focus on spiritual and physical well-being.

Significance of Chadhakhai in Odia Culture

In Odia culture, Chadhakhai is not just a day to break the fast but also a time for family gatherings, where people share food and joy. It is deeply rooted in the idea of balance — balancing both spiritual and physical health. This day also symbolizes the transition from the rainy season to the cold season (winter), where people take special care to avoid seasonal illnesses by observing health rituals like fasting and then indulging in wholesome, rejuvenating meals.
Thus, Chadhakhai holds both spiritual and cultural significance in Odisha, embodying a sense of spiritual renewal, family bonding, and physical well-being.
