Kishorenagar:June 30 {UDN}: The 36th death anniversary of Padma Shri Binod Kanungo, the renowned creator of the Jnanamandala encyclopedia, was observed on Monday at his birthplace, Mallipur in Kishorenagar, Cuttack district. A memorial meeting was held under the chairmanship of retired teacher Pradipta Acharya.
Former Registrar of Utkal University of Culture, Dr. Sachchidra Raula, attended as the chief guest, while social worker Dr. Bibhudatta Khandayat Ray delivered the keynote address. The speakers highlighted Kanungo’s remarkable life and contributions to Odisha’s literary and educational heritage.
They recalled that Binod Kanungo actively participated in India’s freedom struggle and was imprisoned during the independence movement. After Independence, he dedicated himself to literature and knowledge dissemination by compiling the landmark Jnanamandala encyclopedia, which played a significant role in educating generations and enriching Odia literature.
The programme began with an introductory address by Dr. Kishore Chandra Das, while Dr. Narayan Mohanty introduced the guests. The event paid heartfelt tribute to Kanungo’s enduring legacy and his invaluable contribution to education, literature, and society.
