Malkangiri, May 11: Demands have intensified for immediate attention to various issues affecting the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Residential School located at the district headquarters of Malkangiri. Functioning successfully since 2016 in association with Government Upper Primary School, Butiguda, the residential school currently provides education to students from Classes II to VIII.
At present, students including dropouts, child labourers, children from single-parent families, orphans, and children with special needs are being given priority admission in the institution. The school operates with approval from the District Child Protection Unit and Samagra Shiksha Department, with approximately Rs 2,200 being spent monthly per child for food and daily necessities.
Parents and guardians have expressed concern over the shortage of teaching and support staff. While two part-time teachers provide additional coaching in the morning and evening, there is a strong demand for the appointment of another teacher. Moreover, the posts of watchman and peon have reportedly remained vacant for over two years, creating difficulties in the daily functioning of the school.
Concerns have also been raised regarding inadequate hostel facilities for students from the general category. Intellectuals and local residents have demanded an increase in the school’s seating capacity and hostel infrastructure, similar to other residential schools in Kaladapalli and Niladrinagar, where facilities are available for around 100 students.
Parents and social organisations have urged the government to take immediate steps for staff appointments, improvement of hostel facilities, and strengthening of educational infrastructure keeping in view the future of the children and the educational needs of the district.
