Demanding Better Protection and Benefits, Drivers’ Union Presents Six-Point Memorandum to Government for Social Security and Welfare Reforms

Jayapur, June 16: Representatives of various drivers’ organizations submitted a memorandum to the District Collector, Superintendent of Police (SP), and Regional Transport Officer (RTO), demanding measures for the safety, social security, and welfare of professional drivers in Odisha.

The drivers’ union presented a six-point charter of demands and also discussed several issues related to the Odisha Motor Transport Drivers and Workers Welfare Board.
According to the organization, the key demands include:

Inclusion of all professional drivers under the Odisha Motor Transport Drivers and Workers Welfare Board.
Enactment of a special law to protect drivers who often become victims of public anger and assaults.
Provision of a special pension or allowance for professional drivers after they attain the age of 60 years.
Establishment of parking facilities, rest houses, and toilets at every 100-kilometre interval along major routes.
Reservation of priority employment for Odia drivers, with at least 70% representation in mines and industrial establishments across the state.
Declaration of September 1 as National Drivers’ Day.
During the submission of the memorandum, Drivers’ Union members including Ram Krishna Mishra and Kali Pattnaik, along with other office-bearers, were present.
