Digital Learning on the Rise in Odisha: 40percent Students Embrace Technology-Based Study Methods Across Schools and Colleges

Bhubaneswar, March 24:  The popularity of technology in Odisha’s education sector is steadily increasing. Students across the state are becoming more inclined toward studying through smartphones. The use of smartphones and the internet among teachers and students is growing rapidly.
According to the second edition of the “Bharat Survey for EdTech” report published by Central Square Foundation, nearly 40% of students in the state are using various digital tools for learning.
Key Findings of the Survey:
Around 94% of families in the state have at least one smartphone.
95% of families own more than one smartphone.
About 71% of students get access to a smartphone, and 66% of them use it daily.
Although most students depend on phones belonging to other family members, 90% can easily access the internet.
58% of students are aware of EdTech tools, and 40% actively use them for studies.
Most Popular Platforms Among Students:
YouTube – 99percent
WhatsApp – 87percent
Google – 63percent
ChatGPT – 4percent
Google Gemini – 3percent
Meta AI – 3percent
Teachers and Technology:
Technology awareness among teachers is also significant:
99percent of teachers are aware of EdTech tools.
98percentuse them for teaching purposes.
96percent rely on WhatsApp, 80percent on Google, and many on YouTube.
16percent use the DIKSHA app, and 13percent use e-Pathshala.
Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI):
48percent of students have heard about Artificial Intelligence.
20percent understand its educational applications.
13percent use GenAI tools for learning, and 74% of them use it daily.
67percent of teachers have heard about AI, and 40% use it in teaching.
12percent of EdTech-using teachers apply GenAI for classroom and school-related activities.
Among teachers using GenAI, 53% use it several times a week, while 33percentuse it daily.
Shaveta Sharma, CEO and Managing Director of Central Square Foundation, stated that the report provides a clear picture of how technology is being used in education across India. She emphasized that digital tools have reached most families, and understanding how students and teachers integrate technology into daily learning is crucial for policymakers, educators, and innovators.
About the Study:
The study surveyed around 1,500 respondents, including 1,250 families and 250 teachers. It covered children aged 6 to 18 studying in government, government-aided, and low-fee private schools. Classroom discussions were also conducted to deeply examine the use of digital tools in teaching and learning.
The report serves as an important guide for expanding the use of technology in Odisha’s education system in the future.
Founded in 2012, Central Square Foundation is a non-profit organization working to improve elementary education across 14 states in India through systemic reforms. It collaborates with 11 state governments to implement foundational literacy and numeracy programs, strengthen early childhood education, and promote the effective use of EdTech in education.
