Bhubaneswar: Aug 18 [UDN}:Odisha is bracing for another spell of intense monsoon activity as multiple weather systems over the Bay of Bengal are influencing the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that rainfall activity is likely to continue across Odisha for the next several days, with heavy to very heavy rain possible in several areas. A fresh low-pressure area over the North Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen and move northwestwards, adding to the already active monsoon conditions.
The latest weather developments have raised concerns over a prolonged spell of rain, particularly in districts that have already received substantial rainfall. According to the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, rainfall activity may continue for around five to six days, with some locations likely to receive intense spells of rain.
The current weather situation is linked to a low-pressure system that formed over the North Bay of Bengal off the West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts. The system is expected to become more marked and move northwestwards, potentially increasing rainfall over Odisha and neighbouring states. Another weather system in the region is also contributing to the persistence of the monsoon activity, raising the possibility of repeated heavy-rain spells rather than a quick improvement in weather conditions.
Several parts of Odisha may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, while thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds may accompany rain in some areas. Coastal and northern districts could remain particularly vulnerable to intense rainfall as the weather system moves closer to the region.
The continuing rainfall could create problems in low-lying areas, with the possibility of waterlogging, temporary flooding of roads, reduced visibility and disruption to traffic. Urban areas may also face drainage-related problems if intense rain occurs over a short period. Authorities and residents in vulnerable locations have therefore been advised to remain alert and closely monitor the latest weather warnings.
The Odisha coast is also expected to experience rough weather conditions. The IMD has warned of squally winds along and off the Odisha coast, with wind speeds potentially reaching 40–50 kmph and gusting up to around 60 kmph during the warning period. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea during hazardous conditions.
With the monsoon remaining active and low-pressure systems repeatedly developing over the Bay of Bengal, Odisha is likely to remain under the influence of wet weather for several more days. People living in flood-prone and low-lying areas should remain particularly cautious, while commuters should be prepared for sudden changes in weather, waterlogging and reduced visibility.
The situation remains dynamic, and the intensity and distribution of rainfall may change as the low-pressure system moves. Residents are advised to follow official IMD and Odisha government advisories, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and take precautions in areas vulnerable to flooding or water accumulation.
