Baripada, June 10: A major piece of good news has emerged from the famous Similipal Tiger Reserve, the second-largest biosphere reserve in Asia. Tigress Zeenat, which was brought from Maharashtra, has reportedly become a mother. About three weeks ago, Zeenat gave birth to four cubs. This is being considered a major success for wildlife lovers and the Forest Department.
Officials of the Forest Department stated that the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) will provide detailed information on the 5th. Field Director of the Similipal Tiger Conservation Project and Regional Chief Conservator of Forests, Baripada Circle, Dr. Prakash Gogineni, said that an atmosphere of happiness and celebration has spread across the sanctuary after tigress Zeenat became a mother once again.
According to reports, due to the excessive increase in the number of black tigers (melanistic tigers) in Similipal, concerns had arisen regarding genetic imbalance among the Royal Bengal tigers. To address this issue, tigress Zeenat was brought in November 2024 from Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve and relocated to Similipal.
Since then, the Forest Department had been continuously monitoring her movements. Now, after successfully giving birth, a new ray of hope has emerged for Similipal’s tiger conservation programme.
Forest officials are viewing this event as a historic achievement. Special security arrangements have been made for the protection of Zeenat and her four cubs. The news has brought immense joy among environmentalists and wildlife enthusiasts, and it is being regarded as another major success in Similipal’s tiger conservation efforts.
