Intense Competition for CT Admission with Twelve Applicants Competing for Every Available Seat

Bhubaneswar, June 17: A notification has been issued for admissions into the Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.), commonly known as the CT (Certified Teacher) course.

Applications will be accepted until June 18. With only four days left before the deadline, applications have already reached 12 times the number of available seats. Notably, the number of male applicants is nearly three times higher than that of female applicants. Similar to B.Ed. admissions, where applications are around 14 times the available seats, the CT course is witnessing a comparable trend.

Growing Interest in Employment-Oriented Courses

General Graduation Courses Facing Vacant Seats

According to data from SAMS (Student Academic Management System), there are 6,550 seats available for CT admissions across 68 institutions in Odisha. So far, 78,952 students have applied for these seats. Among them, 60,700 are male applicants, while 18,252 are female applicants.

After completing Higher Secondary (+2), students are showing less interest in pursuing regular undergraduate (degree) courses. Across the state, there are 277,131 seats available for undergraduate admissions. However, applications had not even crossed the 200,000 mark, forcing the Higher Education Department to extend the application deadline. Following the extension, the total number of applications has reached 230,420.

In contrast, not a single seat remains vacant in B.Ed. or CT admissions. This clearly indicates that students today are increasingly attracted to courses that offer better employment opportunities. As a result, parents and students are demanding an increase in the number of seats in teacher education programmes.

It is worth mentioning that while there are only 2,800 seats available in B.Ed. and M.Ed. courses, around 113,000 candidates have applied and appeared for the entrance examination. This overwhelming response highlights the growing preference for professional and job-oriented education among students in Odisha.
