Coffee is more than a beverage. For millions of people around the world, it is part of a daily ritual, a moment of connection and a product shaped by the hard work of farmers and workers. On International Coffee Day, celebrated on October 1, the spotlight turns to the journey behind every cup—and to the communities that make that journey possible.
Coffee had long been celebrated on different dates in different parts of the world. In 2014, members of the International Coffee Organization agreed to observe October 1 as a common International Coffee Day. The first official International Coffee Day was celebrated on October 1, 2015, in Milan, Italy.
Today, the occasion goes beyond celebrating coffee itself. It is also a chance to recognise the farmers who cultivate coffee, the workers involved in harvesting and processing, and everyone whose effort helps transform coffee beans into the cup enjoyed by consumers.
Koraput Coffee: Odisha’s Special Connection
India’s coffee story is usually associated with the traditional coffee-growing regions of the south, but Odisha has been steadily creating its own identity through coffee cultivation in Koraput.
Located in the Eastern Ghats, Koraput is known for its hills, forests and rich agricultural landscape. Coffee cultivation has become an important part of the region’s emerging agricultural story, bringing together farming, local livelihoods and the growing interest in Indian-origin coffee.
Koraput Coffee carries a sense of place. The beans are connected to the region’s distinctive landscape and to the farmers whose work begins long before the first cup is brewed.
For coffee enthusiasts, regional coffees such as Koraput Coffee also offer an opportunity to explore flavours associated with different Indian growing regions. For local communities, coffee can contribute to agricultural diversification and create opportunities across cultivation, processing and value addition.
Behind Every Cup Is a Farmer
International Coffee Day offers a simple reminder: the story of coffee does not begin at a café.
It begins on a farm.
From nurturing coffee plants and harvesting ripe cherries to processing, drying and preparing the beans for roasting, each stage involves time, skill and human effort. The final cup may last only a few minutes, but the journey behind it can take months of careful work.
That makes the celebration particularly meaningful for coffee-growing communities such as those in Koraput.
A Taste of Odisha
As Odisha’s coffee identity continues to develop, Koraput Coffee represents more than a locally grown product. It reflects the possibility of turning the region’s agricultural strengths into a distinctive product with a story that can connect local producers with consumers beyond the state.
This International Coffee Day, a cup of Koraput Coffee can therefore be seen as a small celebration of something much bigger—a farmer’s effort, the character of Odisha’s highlands and the growing recognition of locally produced coffee.
One cup of coffee can carry an entire story—the hard work of our farmers, the character of our soil and the pride of Odisha.
Happy International Coffee Day!
Proudly brewed with the spirit of Koraput, Odisha.
